Books We Recommend on Psychology

These books are foundational to being an effective presenter and facilitator.  In order to establish congruence with your audience, first one must "know oneself!"  These books are part of the path to this goal.

The Hidden Power of the Heart - Sara Paddison

Proper motivation begins with this book.  It shows many techniques to enhance "heart" communication

Meeting the Shadow - Zweig and Abrams

Follows the Jungian "Shadow" concept in a compilation of different writers

Romancing the Shadow - Zweig and Wolf

Follows the Jungian "Shadow" concept as above, with different viewpoints on how to work with the Shadow

Social Style/Management Style - Robert Bolton, Dorothy G. Bolton

Works with the principles of the four personality types: Driver, Amiable, Expressive and Analytical.  Works with personality types from a management perspective.

Psycho-Cybernetics - Maxwell Maltz

Classic on changing personal patterns.  If you are trying to change, but it doesn’t seem to stick, check this one out.  There is another version, a 2000 version that doesn’t seem to be as good as the original.

Reading People – Jo-Ellen Dimitrius and Mark Mazzarella

Where is "reading people" critical? Picking your jury for a trial!

Great book on how to quickly size up someone.  Written by famous jury consultant who picked the OJ Simpson criminal jury for the defense (among others.)

People Skills – Robert Bolton

Works with the principles of the four personality types: Driver, Amiable, Expressive and Analytical.  By knowing our type, and matching other’s types we can communicate more effectively.

Gifts Differing – Understanding Personality Type – Isabel Briggs Myers

Focuses on the Myers-Briggs personality types and understanding them.

The Cult of Personality: How Personality Tests Are Leading Us to Miseducate Our Children, Mismanage Our Companies, and Misunderstand Ourselves

We found this book to be very interesting, although we feel the author tends to be slightly fanatical at times. With that said, this book really reveals many of the issues with using assessment tools in today's business environments.
